– Traders count losses after closure of market
Days after the closure of the popular Mile 12 market
in Lagos over violent inter ethnic crisis, some of the
traders in the market have adopted some parts of
Ogun state as their new point of trade.
Findings by NAIJ.com's Godday Eleojo have revealed
that the Kara area of Ogun state, which is about 1
kilometer away from the boundary between Ogun
state and Lagos, has been dominated by some Mile
12 traders. In an attempt to stabilize their means of income, the
traders, who have defected from the Mile 12 market
sfter it was shut down by the Lagos state
government, not only continued their trade at Kara,
but have also stormed the Kara-Ilepo area of Ibafo
also in Ogun state.
One of the traders who refused to mention his name,
told NAIJ.com that the areas have been adopted to
offload their goods from lorries after which they
make sales from them.
Also in a conversation with one of the traders, who
was simply identified as Mama Risi, it was revealed
that the Mile 12 traders have been asked to come up
with the sum of 60 million naira before the market
would be reopened.
Meanwhile, sources told our correspondent that the
Mile 12 crisis was triggered by the death of a
pregnant woman and a minor who were knocked
down by separate Hausa motorcyclists.
"Hausa motorcyclists knocked down two people in
the area and that was why some of the Yoruba guys
replied in a reaction that have left several people
dead and injured," an unnamed source informed.
It has also been rumored that the Hausas have
stormed Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, in reaction to
this tribal conflict.
