Explosion rocks MNJTF base in Cameroon
– The Multinational Joint Task Force base at Mora
in Cameroon was struck by an explosion
– The fire burnt an ammunition store to ashes
– Local resident initially feared that it was an
attack carried out by Boko Haram
MNJTF comprises units from Nigeria, Cameroon,
Chad, Niger and Benin.
A military base belonging to the West African
multinational military force tasked with fighting Boko
Haram was struck by an explosion on Wednesday,
January 27.
According to Today.ng, the fire at the Multinational
Joint Task Force (MNJTF) base at Mora in Cameroon
burnt an ammunition store to ashes.
Frederic Ndjima, a resident of Mora town, said that
local people heard explosions around the military
base in the early hours of Wednesday and initially
feared that it was an attack carried out by members
of the Boko Haram sect. Therefore, scared residents
left their houses and fled in the direction of the
Mandara mountains for safety.
However, CRTV national radio reported that
preliminary investigations revealed that the cause of
the explosion was an electrical short circuit.

The radio station also reported that there were no
injuries in the explosion "because the missiles and
rocket heads were directed towards the mountains
behind the military base by defence experts who
predicted the possibility of such an incident".
The base at Mora is the first of the three MNJTF
bases with the other two located in Chad and Nigeria
respectively.
The Mora base is commanded by Brigadier-General
Bouba Dobekreo and hosts Cameroonian and
Chadian soldiers who operate around the Cameroon-
Nigeria border and the Lake Chad.
Meanwhile, suspected members of Boko Haram have
recently carried out several attacks in Cameroon's Far
North.
On Monday, January 25, four suicide bombers
attacked a central market in the village of Bodo,
killing at least 25 people.
Last week, a suicide bomber killed 12 people and
wounded at least one
in an attack on a mosque in Kouyape in northern
Cameroon.
